Art of the Olympians Heads West

A traveling exhibit with works of the Olympian Artists at Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery is on display at the Rancho Mirage Public Library this week. This exhibition is the first time AOTO has been displayed on the West Coast.

The Olympics were meant to celebrate well-rounded citizen- athletes from ancient times and the Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery is working to carry on that legacy through, interactive exhibits, youth outreach programs, lectures traveling exhibits.

Legendary, Olympic gold medalist in discus, Al Oerter, founded Art of the Olympians before his death in 2007. Oerter wanted to create a family of Olympians to help educate communities about the Ancient Olympic Games and how art and sport can be used as tools to bridge continents, build communities and motivate individuals to strive for excellence. He looked to fellow Olympian and AOTO Board Member Liston Bochette to help build the foundation for the Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery in Fort Myers, Fla.

The traveling exhibition includes paintings and photographs which are temporarily passed into the hands of the USA World Cup 2011 Modern Pentathlon, a qualifying event for the 2012 Olympics being hosted in the valley this week.

Featured in this traveling exhibition are the works of: the late Olympic discus thrower Al Oerter, decathlon and bobsled Olympian Liston Bochette; figure skater Peggy Fleming; the late sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner, American bobsledder/photographer Christopher Coleman, and Swiss fencer/painter Jean-Blaise Evequoz.
