Catch the Olympic Spirit on June 21

Art of the Olympians Museum and Gallery (AOTO) will host a Family Fun Run, in cooperation with the Fort Myers Track Club, to celebrate Olympic Day on June 21.

AOTO Olympic Day Fun Run

Olympic Day, which was introduced in 1948, is celebrated by thousands of people in more than 160 countries. Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. From June 17-26, 2011, communities across the U.S. will celebrate Olympic Day through educational programming and other activities.

On June 21, Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson Jr. will begin the festivities with an Olympic Day Proclamation at 7:00 p.m. Registration for the event is free. Participants and guests will hear from Olympian Jason Smith, member of the US Olympic Team 2010 in Curling will be on hand to share his Olympic experience. There will be activities for children and official Olympic films featuring dozens of Olympians, like Apollo Ono, talking about the Olympism.

Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles. The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
